One framework. Infinite possibilities.

Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts & Sciences (KSAS) sets the standard for excellence in research-based undergraduate education. Our faculty have designed a flexible framework unique to Hopkins. It ensures that you gain invaluable knowledge, skills, and abilities while exercising the freedom to carve your own path — all with expert guidance.

Your First Year

Creating Community & Connection

Leap into learning at KSAS through the First-Year Foundation (FYF), two courses capped at 12 students each. Practice close reading, active listening, and analytical reasoning. Share ideas and contribute to ongoing conversations and debates. Connect with full-time faculty. Get to know other new students, whose interests and life experiences may be completely different from yours. Make friends. The promise of FYF is more than a firmer grounding in the habits you need to thrive at Hopkins — it’s the exhilaration of knowing you belong here.

The Krieger Difference
Broadening Minds to Build Expertise
Beyond the First-Year Foundation, every course at Krieger is tagged with at least one of six Foundational Abilities. By graduation, you'll have developed them all, honing the range of skills and sensibilities that lay the groundwork for reaching the highest levels of expertise and innovation in any endeavor.

Majors & Minors
Sharpening your Focus
At the end of your first year, you’ll officially declare your major. That’s the time to hone in on what grabs you. What questions motivate you? What methods do you want to master? Go with what you gravitate toward. If your interests pull you in different directions, talk to your advisor about a second major or minor.
Hands-On Learning

Gaining Research Experience

Discovery is the Krieger School’s mission, and we live it 24/7. Our faculty guide students to and through investigations of all kinds. Gun violence prevention, ancient Greek tragedy, environmental protection, astrophysical dynamics, social justice, filmmaking — all topics are in bounds. STEM majors support world-class researchers in labs across JHU. Projects and Methods courses (FA6) expand every student’s research capacities. If you’re eager to learn from — and with — innovators on the cutting-edge of knowledge, KSAS is the place to be.
